Internet search engines can tell you a lot of things.

Type into your favorite search engine the phrase “sinking cities in the world.” You will see a list of some of the large cities of the world that are slowly sinking.

Jakarta, Indonesia is sinking at over 6 inches a year.

They are actually moving the capital out of Jakarta because of how much the city is sinking. The famous city of Venice is also sinking according to some reports. Bangkok is sinking quite fast as well.

Closer to home, the lists tell us that New York City is sinking. Miami is sinking. Charleston is sinking. Much of this sinking is caused by pumping ground water from under the city. There are consequences to tampering with the very foundations underneath us. These cities are suffering the consequences.

I Peter 1:13 states,

Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

Our world is ever changing. It is turbulent. It is violent. Yet the foundation of our lives is none other than Jesus Christ.

When the storm is all around us and others are sinking in despair, we have a sure foundation that will never sink.

As we think about all the churches across the United States uniting in prayer and seeking a renewed outpouring of the Holy Spirit, we can do it knowing we have assurance that Jesus Christ is our sure foundation. Let us all be praying for Pentecost not just for 2025, but now and far into the future.
