Teach Us to Number Our Days

Psalm 90 is a prayer of Moses that contrasts the greatness of God with the shortcomings of humanity.

Moses had seen Israel’s triumphs and failures. He had watched God lead His people with tangible proofs of His presence: manna from heaven, water from the rock, a cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night.

Yet Israel still struggled to trust Him.

Against that backdrop Moses writes, “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom” (Psalm 90:12).

One of the hardest yet most groundbreaking moments in our spiritual walk is when we finally learn to let go and let God.

It is when we stop idolizing ourselves and realize that we are enrolled in the school of heaven. Life is not about us. It is about Him. We are not the masters of our lives. God is. We are the students and He is the Teacher.

Israel’s journey was never simply about getting to Canaan. It was about trusting the One who could take them there.

The same is true for us.

Some of the broken promises, trials, valleys and low points we experience may not mean that God has left us. They may be moments when He is drawing near and saying, “Trust Me.”

Wisdom is eating the manna God provides every day, even when we do not know where tomorrow’s provision will come from. Wisdom is relying on the Rock who is Jesus and satisfies our thirst. Wisdom is trusting the pillar of fire that guides us when everything around us is dark. Wisdom is stepping into the Red Sea even when the waters have not completely opened.

It is possible that some of the very issues we continue struggling with are lessons we still need to learn.

We wander. We question. We sometimes resist God’s leading.

So Moses says, “Teach us.”

Perhaps that is what it means to number our days: to recognize that our time is limited and allow God to teach us how to live each day with wisdom.

God is eternal. We are not.

So today, may our prayer be simple:

“Lord, teach us to number our days. Teach us to trust You. And teach us to live wisely.”
